Deplorable living situation
Former Tenant
Pros:
It was very cheap for Williamsburg and there was no credit check required (had to pay rent in cash).
Cons:
Harassment, bugs, no heat, no privacy.
Advice to owner:
You may think that the landlord is odd, but harmless and possibly a character in a funny NYC story. At least that’s what I thought. I unfortunately was so wrong.
The landlord doesn’t seem to respect laws in place to protect tenants. He would come in sometimes more than once a day. If he knocked and we did not answer, he would let himself in. In order to maintain our privacy, we began deadbolting the door, but he would get mad and wait outside until someone had to leave or enter and he would push himself through and yell at us. Am I speaking hyperbolically? God, I wish.
On top of this lack of respect, he was also incredibly discriminatory. He told me and other tenants that he didn’t rent to certain ethnic and racial groups because they were “trouble makers”.
You think that I’m done? Nope. He controlled the heat in the winter, as many landlords do, but he was frugal. He would turn off the heat completely from 10 am- 4pm. I remember not showering because I knew that I would be freezing. When we complained about it he said that we need to “dress for the cold”, pointing to the winter coat he had on. I guess he expected us to wear coats in our own home.
But wait! There’s more.. our apartment became infested with roaches. We told him about it and he said that he didn’t see any roaches so it must not be that bad. When he eventually did hire someone to fix this, he would begin coming in even more to see if they came back.
Don’t let yourself be seduced by the price tag. It’s not worth it.
