Bad Landlord Experience
Former Tenant
Pros:
I thought the neighbors were very nice and I had plenty of space in my apartment. Move in and out was pretty easy.
Cons:
The biggest con is the landlord. He will do anything he can to save a buck & is very aggressive with tenants. He harassed two elderly women who had rent stabilized units, even taking one to court to get her out. When I left, he made me pay him 200 dollars to get a professional cleaner even though the place was in much better condition than when I moved in. He even harassed me to pay for light bulbs that I had “taken out” of the ceiling (they were never there in the first place). There were safety hazards (water coming through the lights during storms, electrical sockets that smelled like they were burning, etc). I got a deal on rent due to the pandemic & he gave me a $900 increase upon renewal despite that being higher than anything he’d previously rented it out for & it being super outdated & would call me and my neighbor often to complain to us about how we weren’t paying him enough and it wasn’t fair. The only time he was pleasant was when he realized he could have been in trouble for getting me my deposit back months later than it was due to me.

Owner is crazy
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location and street
Cons:
Owner is crazy, he will scream and curse at you. I’m scared of him. I saw him screaming at people on the street. And the super is not helpful at all. Rodent problem, you see a ton of rats especially around the garbage outside. Don’t do a good job taking care of it. Not surprised based on the owner.
Apartment not painted great.
Glad I moved out

Get in some anger management classes

Lots of Issues
Former Tenant
Pros:
Not much really.
Cons:
Huge mice problem! My roommates and I caught 4 over the course of 3 months but there were definitely 2-3 that we missed. We sealed up our door gaps so they wouldn’t get into our room but one chewed through it! Our landlord did not take us seriously or bother to send an exterminator.

Walls and floors were very thin so we were able to hear our neighbors walking, talking, etc. It would get scary when they would watch a game because whenever they jumped, our ceiling would shake along with everything else in our apartment. I honestly don’t know how this building is still standing.

Main staircase was crooked and looked like it could collapse at any moment. Hallway was dark and looked like a prison. Floors were always dirty. There was a dead mouse on the side of the hallway at one point.

Not sure if we had a Super. Some guy our landlord told us to text about not having heat or hot water cursed at me and asked me “to get to the f*cking point” when I was describing our apartment issues. He never showed up.

It was always freezing in the common area because only the bedrooms had heat pipes. Common area was also very dark with a small corner window that looked into a dark alley. Walls were dirty and scuffed before I moved in (didn’t know I could’ve ask them to repaint).

And then after all of this, I somehow didn’t even get my full security deposit because landlord found xyz reasons to charge me.

This apartment/building reminds me of the movie Matilda when Danny Devito used Super Super Glue to stick the bumper to the car...
Advice to owner:
Fix structural problems, hire exterminator, seal up gaps, fix heat, lower overpriced rent, deap clean the building, and hire a real Superintendent.
