Review Summary for Skylark Management Group, Inc.
Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Tenant reviews for SKYLARK MANAGEMENT GROUP, INC. reveal serious management shortcomings across many buildings. Frequent complaints include poor building maintenance, pest infestations, broken elevators, and inadequate heat, alongside cleanliness and garbage issues. Communication with management is often described as rude, unresponsive, and even abusive, with some tenants citing hostile interactions and neglect of tenant concerns. While a few buildings have responsive supers and good neighborly environments, the overall consensus points to neglect and lack of accountability by management, creating difficult living conditions, especially regarding safety, repairs, and pest control. Improvements in professionalism, communication, and property upkeep are strongly needed.

Management Looks Away as the Building Burns; Spend the extra $300, go elsewhere
Former Tenant
Pros:
- Decent pricing
- Great neighborhood
- Super, Malcolm, is a saint and fixes issues within a day if told
- Easy to access garbage
- Washer/dryer is in basement and open for everyone to use
- Neighbors are friendly and all see the problems with the building
Cons:
- Management is definition horrible, not addressing everything from flies, security threats, broken stairs, fire hazards, broken elevators, and more
- Communication with management can be abusive with Art and Merina both saying things like, "Fuck off, I don't have to do anything." to "You are a nuisance and I owe you nothing."
- Elevator has been broken for over a year
- Basement where laundry is looks like a dungeon
- Broken security systems with cameras not working and people constantly sneaking in
- New appliances do not fit the flooring plan and can become a pain to use
- Flies, ants, and rats are pretty common and have been addressed
- Management is constantly fighting some harassment claim because of their behavior
Advice to owner:
Hire new employees, start being accountable, and treat your tenants properly.

EDITED: Building is Falling Apart
Former Tenant
Pros:
Do not live here
Cons:
Elevator has been out for months on end with no communications from management. Building is infested, dirty, unmanaged, and crumbling (quite literally) in multiple places

Awful Management and Poor Conditions
Former Tenant
Pros:
Needed a place quickly and found a sunny and bright, pet friendly apartment.
Cons:
Building is constantly filthy - a thick layer of grime on every surface and bits of trash on the floors in all public areas. Numerous packages stolen and management refused to assist. They completely stopped responding after several attempts to contact them when multiple packages went missing.

Water doesn’t drain, causing sitting water in sinks and tub. Elevator is down several days each month and was down for a few weeks solid at one point. Refrigerator doesn’t maintain temperature - food either defrosts or produce freezes and then needs to be thrown out.

Can’t turn radiators off - they’re all broken. Pipes in walls bang throughout the morning and night, waking tenants up. Gaps around AC wall units, letting bugs in. Pests throughout the building.

Basement floods periodically and smells like sewage. Walls are paper thin and you hear all neighbor noise.

Management office team is horrific, unprofessional and non-responsive. Literally calling and screaming at tenants when THEY make a mistake. The woman in the office is emotionally unhinged, abusive, makes threats and blames tenants for her errors. Have to say that I’ve never dealt with someone like her in my life..
Advice to owner:
Maintain your properties and speak to tenants in a professional and helpful manner. Remember that we’re paying rent so you have a source of income.

Avoid avoid avoid
Former Tenant
Pros:
Quiet and safe neighborhood and never had my packages stolen
Cons:
The management does not do anything unless you call 311. The leasing office workers are the rudest people I've ever talked with. I had a leak in my apartment for about a year, the elevator was constantly broken, and they don't clean the hallways unless someone is moving in. My other neighbors had worse experiences than me.
Advice to owner:
Respect the tenants and fix issues ASAP.

Decent Building, pest free, good super
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great block and the Super is "super"
Cons:
occasional drunk sleeping on the stairs, but that's no fault of the building.
Advice to owner:
keep up the good work.

Merina Gordon Deserves Jail Time
Former Tenant
Pros:
Close to park
Decently quiet
Big layout
Cons:
Vermin - flies/gnats, cockroaches, & mice
Ant infestations
Repeated refrigerator power outages
Damage to numerous pieces of clothing as a direct result of use of the faulty in-unit washer/dryer
Broken door handles/door locks leaving us locked in or out
A cracked toilet that leaks occasionally (we were promised a new one, but this has not happened)
Slow to heat appliances - stove & oven
The inconvenience of the radiator pipe sharing a wall with the bedroom — the terribly loud noise interrupts our sleep
Lack of climate control in the back bedroom
Merina then gaslights you into believing you could have handled things better. Then she insults you & hurries you to move! Good riddance!!
Advice to owner:
Eat shit & hire people who care

Great building, terrible owners 😬
Former Tenant
Pros:
- patio
- great neighbors
- high ceilings and great living room
Cons:
- when we were negotiating a new lease our requests were met with disrespectful and condescending responses instead of kindly customer service.
- the owners do not care about who lives in the building or how they feel about the property.
- city violations on front door
- little to no garbage management - left up to the tenants
- broken and faulty appliances - a broken fridge that shut off twice - once for 2 days - broken door locks and handles - broken sink faucet, broken toilet.
- we were asked not to document then when the lease ends we’re asked where the documentation was
- rats, mold, cockroaches, and ants
- multiple times contacted the Super and were put to the side — waiting hours sometimes days for a resolution
- one AC unit to cool the whole space that is at the back of the apartment — hot air flow in the back of the building
- noisy steam pipes that wake you up every day at 7 AM during cold months
-
Advice to owner:
Tenants make a building great or not great. Maybe consider people’s requests instead of dismissing them, insulting their intelligence, calling them liars, and then pushing them out the door. Merina Gordon shouldn’t be a leasing agent she has no idea what happens at the property or what the issues are. She dumps all responsibility to the Super Intendent who isn’t visible or around because he’s too busy with other buildings. The neglect and lack of care or tact with this ownership group and particularly Ms. Gordon is extremely concerning. There are violations posted on the building door from the city maybe you might look into that.

Mixed bag, greedy rude management company
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great location. Great water pressure. Good service on appliances.
Cons:
Horrible issues with leaks.
Grossly insufficient heat - they are baseboards. Extremely expensive to run and does not keep the apartment warm.
The management company is rude and condescending whenever you need to speak with them.
They will jack up your rent significantly when renewal comes. Some neighbors are rent-controlled and suspect that many 'market rate' units in the building are in fact rent-stabilized.
The trash area is disgusting.

Do not recommend
Former Tenant
Pros:
Good location, quiet neighborhood
Cons:
Service requests were not addressed in a timely manner. Had a fridge issue that got addressed 3-4 days later so had to toss all my food. Also had a terrible mice issue I am forever scarred lol

-super intendant is helpful
- location is good, nice space
Cons:
- some requests never dealt with
- messy in front of building, hallways are dingy too

A terrible experience from beginning to end
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location was good
Cons:
Heater did not work in bedroom, reached out multiple times and did not get any resolution until a couple of weeks before I moved out
For the first roughly 3 months, I had no hot water. It also always came out brown. Texted the super over and over again, even looped in his manager and didn’t hear anything. The hot water situation was eventually resolved and was working when I left but not the brown water.
Super never came to pick up garbage for months. It got to a point where there was so much garbage in the basement, you couldn’t see the floor and it stunk. Disgusting.
The management company never took responsibility for any of complaints and was EXTREMELY combative. The super was nonexistent, would always promise to fix issues with my apartment but seldom showed up.
Advice to owner:
I don’t even know where to begin. I can also almost guarantee this will fall on deaf ears anyway.

Very Dirty Place
Former Tenant
Pros:
The apartments are spacious and have a nice layout
Cons:
The cleanliness theres always garbage outside none cleans
The PM is a bit annoying to deal with
The state of the apartments are not in the best of shape
Roaches and mice in all apartments
Advice to owner:
Clean and maintain the property

Nightmare situation no heat no gas
Former Tenant
Pros:
Good size, we had the whole second floor.
Cons:
No heat no gas, very aggressive management. They gave us 3 space heaters and told us that was sufficient for winter. Art Blount the property manager got especially aggressive after we made 311 complaints, threatened to bring us to court, we would of easily won btw. Our upstairs neighbor eventually sued and won major concessions, and refunds for rent. L&E Brokerage the management company was an absolute joke, sending us wrong statements, wrong reminders for rent even though we paid on time.

Entire experience from start to finish was the worst, most pitiful renting experience I’ve ever had. Oh, also the “massage parlor” downstairs was shut down for prostitution; go figure — stay away.
Advice to owner:
Na na na.

Cons:
Indoor cleaning can be better

Apartment "gut renovated" cheapest way possible
Former Tenant
Pros:
Neighbors are fairly quiet and nice
Cons:
Halls are smelly and dirty. Cluttered under stairs. Dog poop in halways.

So many rats I'm afraid to enter or leave after sundown. I just run and play loud music.

You can't reach owner and building manager is rude and unhelpful.

I've requested repairs months ago that were never fulfilled.

Radiators not drained so the loud noise of the heat coming up wakes me up 2-3 times a night over the winter and i still need space heaters.

Packages always stolen since they promised to put in a new intercom system over a year ago and in the meantime everyone has the code to enter the building. I had to get PO box and residents have filed multiple police reports.

My apartment was so cheaply renovated the grout cracked within 2 months, tiles came loose, paint chip always need to be swept up, and my windows fall off the hinges if i try to open or close them.

Owner is super shady in raising the rent right before signing or extending.
Advice to owner:
He owns multiple buildings and it's his side hustle. He doesn't care as long as he can charge max rent. He put one lady in charge of a bunch of units and doesn't properly supervise the superintendents.

Cheap building
Lots of Columbia students

Unresponsive management
Appliances break very easily

No heat for most of winter
Former Tenant
Pros:
Huge living room.
Cons:
Property manager is a monster. Left us without heat until February. No gas for our entire lease. Avoid at all costs unless they have renovated recently. Test stove top.

Nice apartments, many issues
Former Tenant
Pros:
The layout of the apartments are beautiful, they have new appliances in most apartments. The super is very responsive and tries to get things done.
Cons:
The property manager might as well be a a toddler, he is unresponsive to your requests for anything and when he does respond he acts like a petulant child. My apartment was not cleaned before I moved in, non of my appliances were hooked up and he did not give a shit. Garbage piles up on the sidewalk and in front of the door, neighbors are loud and rude and have had the cops called on them for domestic abuse. There’s a mouse problem in most apartments that is only taken care of if you complain more than 5 times, they have to be infesting your apartment for them to care. Packages are stolen regularly and the cameras the installed are not working because they’re too cheap to finish the job.
Advice to owner:
Get a new job where you don’t have to talk or deal with people. To say you’re ‘not a people person’ is an understatement.

Not bad, not great . Safe neighborhood
Former Tenant
Pros:
Nice appliances, very quiet, good layout of apartments, very safe neighborhood. Elevator building. Feels secure
Cons:
Way too hot. Mosquito problem in apartments even in winter months. Packages are stolen. Oven works poorly. Hallways aren’t maintained that well.
Advice to owner:
Fix cameras, better maintain stairs and hallway

Poor management company
Former Tenant
Pros:
Good size renovated apartment, quiet
Cons:
Do not take care of the building/staircases, the super is very rude and not responsive
Advice to owner:
