Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Recent reviews of 42 Bank Street emphasize its exceptional West Village location as the strongest asset, offering convenience and neighborhood charm. The building is older with dated layouts and some maintenance issues, including occasional pest problems—mice and cockroaches have been reported but usually addressed, though not always fully resolved. Management is generally responsive but sometimes slow, and the super is noted as friendly yet occasionally overwhelmed. Units vary, with some updates present but others needing appliance improvements and better window insulation to reduce noise. While the building offers quietness and good water pressure, noise from neighbors and poor soundproofing are concerns. Rent prices are considered high relative to services provided. Overall, despite its flaws, many tenants recommend the building for its location and solid community atmosphere.

Best I could do in WV.
Former Tenant
Pros:
Excellent location for experiencing the West Village without too much noise in the evenings. Reasonably priced for the neighborhood. Building is dated, but typical for the neighborhood, and old-fashioned layout made my1BR apartment feel roomier than its square footage would imply.
Cons:
Doubt this building will ever be fully free of mice unless and until it is gut-renovated. My next-door neighbor and I had mice in our shared wall. Management were unable or unwilling to resolve by the time I moved out; I placed my own traps to maintain my sanity in the kitchen and bedroom.

Expensive but worth it for the most part
Former Tenant
Pros:
The location is amazing. By far the biggest perk of this unit/ building. So close to everything in west village (except for any major grocery stores). The apartment itself is old but semi updated. Haven’t had any major call outs other than when we signed initially they over charged us an extra $300. The unit was advertised as being around $5900 per month and we later learned we would have to pay $6145 (it’s since raised $6340 per month). So I’d say definitely make sure the rate is clearly stated before you sign anything. The management can be slow to respond to maintenance requests but they do eventually respond. Paco the super is a nice, older gentleman and I do genuinely believe he wants the best for the tenants. That being said he needs a lot of help and guidance with most apartment maintenance requests to the point that the tenants would be better off doing it themselves. Overall for the area and the laundry in unit I’d say this apartment is worth it. No issues with pests so that’s a big positive.
Cons:
Hallways are dirty and never cleaned. Management takes weeks and multiple visits to really make any big changes ex. Getting a new laundry machine when ours was clearly broken, fixing the crack in the ceiling
Advice to owner:
Lower the rent. Overall it’s a good, solid unit but price wise it’s absurd how high it is for what you get.
