Building Good, Management Bad
Former Tenant
Pros:
The superintendent is great and very responsive, building is clean. My unit is renovated and I do like the details.
Cons:
Management is not who you want to be in business with. Steve Croman is the building owner and in 2017 he was sentenced to a year in jail and fined $5million for his eviction practices of displacing rent stabilized tenants to destabilize rent stabilized buildings. Steve Croman also settled a class action lawsuit for $8 million in restitution to the tenants he harassed/displaced. We formerly had Cathy Burton as our property manager; she was very rude in all of my interactions and this Spring I saw her visit the building to cuss out/verbally berate a tenant but I didn’t get the backstory on why this occurred. Management routinely claims checks arrive late so they can collect late fees; other tenants posting on www.Cromantenants.org appear to have similar issues. As part of the Croman settlement, the building was required to go under new management so they created a new legal entity but are the same management company from what I can tell. Additionally, I have never had such high utility bills at any other apartment. My apartment is very small but my electric and gas bills are between $150-$200 a month, even in months I have not been here.
Advice to owner:
Get out of the landlord business.
