Beautiful building, horrible management
Former Tenant
Pros:
Huge apartments with high ceilings. Cheap-ish rent for nyc. Great neighborhood.
Cons:
Management is horrible. Not very understanding or flexible and raised everyone’s rent in the middle of the pandemic.
Advice to owner:
More flexibility. Better pest control

Struggles at 500 St. John’s
Former Tenant
Pros:
Big old school interiors Old steam heat The porter is lovely
Cons:
Landlords are horrible people. Only fix things under duress. Office is completely rude. Super never responds to calls and does bare minimum. We have had rodents and bedbugs. There were absolutely no Communications to Tenants during COVID. Not a single note. Including when the super Covid. The courtyard is Left to The tenants to Maintain. The porter is overburdened. The hallways haven’t been painted or Cleaned in years.
Advice to owner:
Stop being so rude. Give tenants a contact if something happens on a weekend or a religious holiday. Properly recycle. Tend to Lead abatement without threatening tenants. Modulate tenants who are irresponsible or violate noise and waste rules. Stop being so rude. Clean the building. Fix the locks on front gates.

The noisiest building I have ever lived in
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great neighborhood, close to the park. Maintenance issues are usually resolved quickly.
Cons:
Walls are extremely thin, noise from neighbors has forced me to wear ear plugs every night and even then am sometimes still woken up from the noise. Fire department across the street is also sometimes an issue, the horns are super loud and they test loud equipment twice a day. The exterminator does come but hasn’t been in a few months and I occasionally see beetles and roaches. Management office is extremely short and rude when calling in with issues.
Advice to owner:
Be more diligent about pest control, do some work to insulate against noise. I would also think they should let potential residents know that it’s noisy before moving in.
