Okay Apartment in a fun neighborhood
Former Tenant
Pros:
Neighbors are fantastic Convenient location Rooftop access Clean
Cons:
Building can be loud with J/M/Z train behind it Some units could use serious renovation
Advice to owner:
Fix apt 25 up, the layout does not make sense

Totally adequate housing
Former Tenant
Pros:
I’ve lived here a year and while I haven’t met all my neighbors, all of those I have met have been quiet, kind, courteous, and respectful to me and one another. The building management is responsive most of the time. Heat is hot in the winter — almost too hot… we slept with windows open in the dead of winter (that good ole “Brooklyn A/C”), while inches of snow piled up outside. Definitely not a complaint, though. Would rather that than no heat.
Cons:
While management is responsive, the super isn’t. He’s a really sweet guy, but simply does not respond to my texts or calls. My partner usually has better luck getting ahold of the super than I do, for whatever reason. Management isn’t much help with this issue. We have noticed (a minimal amount) of bugs in the summertime, but nothing horrifying.

Slumlords w/ stainless steel appliances
Former Tenant
Pros:
Really great location
Cons:
I moved into an apartment that had just been completely renovated. New everything. The whole apartment was jarringly crooked despite the bread new floors. All of the light switches were crooked. The first time it rained water POURED out of the ceiling fan in the bathroom, partially flooding the place. I later found out they do shoddy, unlicensed work and it all made sense. How did I find out? Well in March of 2020 the fire department showed up to turn off the gas after they had ignored a leak for MONTHS. No hot water for a week. No heat, and no cooking gas for the first 2 months of the shelter in place order. I had just stocked up on non-perishables to ride out the city-wide quarantine and suddenly I had no way to cook. Did they immediately offer tenants space heaters and hot plates? No. After about a week of shivering without heat I called and DEMANDED that they provide these replacements. I advocated for myself and got a rent discount to compensate for having no gas, but they refused to offer this to the whole building. They said they would do it on a “case by case basis” even though we were all equally without gas. What this meant was only those who could advocate for themselves got a break on rent. Meaning the many spanish speaking families who’ve lived in the building for decades were screwed over. This all started a lawsuit from the tenants, where a non-profit thought we had a good enough case that they took us on pro bono. In the zoom meetings with the lawyers and other tenants I learned more of their dirty dealings. They had done extensive remodeling that included changing floorplans while NEVER getting a permit from the city. This was highly illegal. None of the contractors were licenses. Oh, and we had a terrible roach infestation. An all around nightmare. My lease ran out and I moved before the lawsuit happened, but I would never rent from frontgate management again.
