Building Report
Review Summary for 132 Meserole Street
Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Recent reviews shed light on 132 Meserole Street, Brooklyn. Although praised for spacious units, good neighbors, and a central location, the building suffers from negligent management. Landlord Zalmen Biederman's unresponsiveness, poor maintenance, and flooding incidents have sparked major tenant dissatisfaction. Unaddressed repairs, pest issues, rent spikes, and rental inaccuracies plague the building's reputation. Residents suggest prompt responses to tenant concerns, improved upkeep, and transparency. While some recommend the building for its location, many caution against renting due to poor management practices and ongoing issues, urging potential tenants to proceed with caution.

WORST LANDLORD IN THE WORLD
Former Tenant
Pros:
Decent space, not insane price.
Cons:
The landlord is an orthodox religious man who WILL take every single jewish holiday off and WILL ignore your calls for WEEKS ON END. He won't even appoint someone else to help while he is gone. He will literally be GONE and you will never be able to contact him. Do yourselves a favor and check and see if he's the landlord for any other building you're trying to rent in and don't bother if he is. Wasting everyone's timing and risking people's livelihoods. In 2020 a bunch of his tenants literally unionized and striked against him.

great location, terrible management
Former Tenant
Pros:
there is central AC and the units are large
Cons:
you could sell crack out of this apartment and the landlord would 1)have no idea 2)could not care less. his response time is worse than your situationship that does not care if you live or die. first floor has an airbnb so it is so loud.
Advice to owner:
respond and take care of the apartment

Do Not Rent From Zalmen
Former Tenant
Pros:
The apartment is bright with a good layout and decent appliances. The neighbors are great and very supportive of each other.
Cons:
Oh god, where to begin. When we first moved in, after confirming multiple times, we were told the apartment would be unlocked with the keys inside. The apartment was locked and we were ignored for two hours by the landlord (the first red flag). Though we had great times in the apartment, Zalmen consistently ignored my texts and calls, our cabinet is still broken from previous tenants and spackle marks covered our walls. Nothing ever got fixed unless I pretty much texted him every day to get a response (his read receipts were also on and I could see he was viewing all of my very messages).

The apartment above us flooded and took out one of our smoke detectors, it was never replaced after probably twenty requests. The rest expired and we were only met with an angry Zalmen who did not replace them but instead said we shouldn’t have gotten rid of expired smoke detectors. The number I received for the “super” also consistently ghosted me every time he was supposed to come over to fix anything, two years of living there and he never followed through.

Although the apartment is not terrible I would never recommend to anyone due to the poor management from Zalmen. I’ve probably lost some hair due to stress from his behaviors. ***Also probably never going to hear from him again so kiss your security deposit goodbye.

illegally converted duplex/ terrible landlord
Former Tenant
Pros:
We have really kind neighbors.
Cons:
Where to even begin?
We moved here in the middle of January of 2023. Our unit was advertised as a 3 bedroom, with the downstairs portion being called the “primary bedroom”. There was a really strong cat pee odor but we figured we would just deep clean and it would go away. We loved the floor plan and location and were excited!

Heat didn’t work downstairs and the temp was hovering around 56 degrees according to our digital thermometer. Landlord was unresponsive so we got a couple of space heaters which we used as sparingly as possible but still racked up nearly 400 in electric bills.

There was a scratching sound and occasional squeaks coming from the ceiling. I tried to ignore it or tell myself it was coming from outside but then eventually discovered rat droppings (yes RAT, not MOUSE) in the downstairs bathroom. We had pest control come and they described several small cracks as “rat highways”. They put poison in the walls, ceiling, and sealed everything. Haven’t noticed any issues since with pests.

In April our unit severely flooded twice. No exaggeration there was about 5 to 6” of sewer water in our main bedroom. We lost all furniture, rugs, tons of clothing, momentos, etc. It was devastating. The landlord not only didn’t answer the phone, he did nothing to help clean. I called and texted him over 100 times and his response was to send some random guy with an industrial dehumidifier. It was loud, made my electric bill astronomical, and it barely got any water out. For 2 weeks between work and taking care of my 8 year old kid, I sifted through ruined belongings and tried to salvage what I could. That was the last straw before I hired an attorney.

NYC DOB came and issued several citations and declared it an illegal conversion, which I had suspected. We also just paid an independent mold specialist to come who said we definitely have a mold issue. COOL COOL COOL.

I could go on and on… bottom line. DO NOT RENT FROM ZALMEN BIEDERMAN.
Advice to owner:
Hire adequate management/super, listen to tenants, show concern when your building endangers tenants

Don’t rent from Zalmen Biederman
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location, yard, vie
Cons:
Notoriously negligent landlord who’s also just a jerk, poor management (Top Quality Management), consistent flooding, faulty heat and AC, just don’t bother until it’s under new ownership.

Overpriced, okay apartment with TERRIBLE landlord
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great natural light in the bedrooms, high ceilings. Location is fantastic, of course. Our unit also had a window that accessed the roof of the auto shop next door (this was falsely advertised to us as a "private roof deck," but it is indeed not technically part of the property), so sometimes we would hang out on there.
Cons:
Small, but that's to be expected in NYC. Upstairs neighbor was running an illegal Airbnb, so there were always strangers coming and going, leaving the front door wide open, and even climbing up the fire escape when they forgot their keys... Zalmen, the landlord, is an exploitative, negligent landlord who almost never responded to urgent requests unless we threatened legal action. Our heat was broken for a week in January and I had to email him every day saying he was breaking the law and sending him photos of the thermostat before he brought someone in to fix it. He also tried to steal our security deposit from us, withholding it and ignoring our calls, texts and emails for three months until we filed in small claims court. I also know they SPIKED the rent for a 3 BR from $3,500 when we signed to $4,500 after we left, soooo... beware.
Advice to owner:
Respect your tenants. Don't steal from them. Give them heat........
