Extreme Dissatisfaction with Nieuw Amsterdam Management - A Warning to Prospective Tenants
Pros
The location and absolute friendliness of the neighbors.
Cons
Where to start: My experience with Nieuw Amsterdam property management has been profoundly negative, reaching a level of unprofessionalism and incompetence that warrants a strong warning to anyone considering renting from them. Communication from this management company is consistently abysmal. Despite submitting multiple tickets, follow-up is virtually non-existent. Attempts to escalate issues to the main office were met with significant pushback, making it clear that tenants are actively discouraged from seeking resolution through higher channels. Key individuals such as CHAY BRITO and Gabriel Stone have demonstrated a troubling lack of professionalism and courtesy. My direct interactions, particularly with Ms. Brito, were marked by a consistently condescending and dismissive tone. Their inability to effectively manage tenant concerns, respond to inquiries in a timely manner, or communicate clearly indicates a fundamental deficiency in basic professional conduct and time management. Beyond the management issues, the property itself was presented in a substandard condition. Tenants should be aware of potential issues including significant pest control problems (specifically roaches) and overall poor maintenance standards, exemplified by superficial paint finishes that mask deeper issues. While the location of these apartments might seem appealing, I cannot overstate the detrimental impact that such consistently poor management has on the living experience. The stress, wasted time, and lack of support from Nieuw Amsterdam, and specifically the named individuals, far outweigh any perceived benefits. I strongly advise prospective tenants to look elsewhere. You will save yourself considerable frustration and discomfort by avoiding Nieuw Amsterdam and any dealings with Chay Brito and Gabriel Stone. My hope is that this review helps others avoid a similar distressing experience.
Advice to the owners
Please for the love of god and all things holy, FIRE CHAY BRITO and get new staff that is actually responsive and tenant concern oriented.
Average Pre-War Rental Building
Pros
The super is friendly and communicates well, not just through phone calls. Repairs could be done better - might be time for him to retire. Part time doorman is wonderful. Hallways are kept clean and trash/recycling is cleaned daily from compactor rooms (dirty tenants sometimes make it seem like this isn't happening). Laundry room is well kept, probably the best public laundry room I've had in my 10 years in NYC. Hot water has been good. I moved in right at the end of heat season, so it's hard to tell if heat is the same.
Cons
Big roach issue in the basement. Pest control doesn't seem to be doing much. Sure, there are two compactor rooms which brings lots of potential for pests, but they could really improve. Very simple repairs take forever to get done. One hour of work was stretched out, and I even had to repaint the area myself because it was done so poorly. Paint work on my apartment was not great upon move in. Management is in over their heads. No email, and phone calls to their office are often unanswered.
Advice to the owners
Modernize communication and invest in pest control.
