Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Recent reviews of 55 Hester Street praise its prime Lower East Side location, cleanliness, and community atmosphere. Residents enjoy spacious apartments with updated interiors like marble kitchens and convenient access to public transit and local amenities. The building features good water pressure and quiet noise levels. However, tenants frequently mention high electric heating costs, poor insulation, and ongoing roof construction impacting comfort. Pest control is generally well-managed, but some reports note occasional rodent issues. Laundry facilities are limited and sometimes poorly maintained. Rent increases and maintenance delays have also been concerns, yet many appreciate responsive landlords and recommend the building overall.

Great apartment, kind landlords

Pros

Liked the landlords and the apartment was nice and building was clean and had a community feel to it

Cons

They raised rents a lot (however we were there during covid and had a great deal + the neighborhood was rapidly gentrifying) And the bathroom had a weird odor coming from the vents that they never got rid of

Advice to the owners

Fix the bathroom smell

Pros

bedrooms are good size for nyc standards

Cons

heat is electric so electric bill is crazy high and insulation is also abysmal, only 1 washer/dryer, exhaust fans in shower and kitchen are terrible
