cockroaches, insane electricity bills, unresponsive landlord/management
Pros
high ceilings, lots of living room space in our unit and natural light in the bedrooms. we also had W/D in unit, which is very rare. the super for the building was extremely kind - he did all the heavy lifting for us in our unit because management was unreliable and ended up having to come almost every month (if not every 2 weeks) to fix things constantly, such as our heating, our AC, etc.
Cons
multiple cockroaches in our unit and insanely high electricity bills every month ($1000+ for our unit, shared by 4 people) even if we were mindful of our electricity usage and turned our heat off when not in use. it was extremely difficult to get a hold of management to fix these issues every month. we ended up just having to pay the bills until they proposed a workaround after we told them we would not be renewing the lease. additionally, there's poor insulation around the entire apartment (one of our roommate's room was persistently cold, below 50 degrees, even with the heat on) whereas the other rooms were warmer. after asking management to fix this issue, the solution they came up with was telling us to buy "heavy curtains" to keep the air from outside drafting in. there was also an unhoused man living right next to the building shooting up in front of our unit - there would be needles just laying around the street. we asked management to install a second lock or a peephole for our front door (which used to be see-through until they replaced it with a regular door) and they never did so. packages were also sometimes stolen because the first door to the building would sometimes not close all the way (we also asked management to fix this and they never did) and the delivery men have no option but to just leave the packages in the stairway of our walk-up.
