Ok apartment, Wonderful block, awful management
Pros
My neighbors were wonderful people. Only one bad neighbor. Location was great: proximity to the park, shopping center. Close to 2 cafes. Beautiful church music every Sunday from nearby Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Generally quiet block. Apartment had lots of light and space.
Cons
Super, Kenny, was almost NEVER there (he does not live in the building despite what apartment listings tell you…he lives in another property on 118th). You had to nag him repeatedly or else go straight to the owner for him to do repairs requests. On move in, we were missing the doorbell on our door and several smoke detectors. Halls were always dirty and gross. Water pressure is awful. Place has roaches and mice…monthly extermination is a joke. Modern appliances/look but cheap and wear out fast. One of my neighbors started renting out her unit as an Airbnb, so take that as you will. The straw that broke the camel’s back was a 40% rent increase with no wiggle room for negotiation.
Advice to the owners
Get a new Super. Kenny’ is so lazy that even local brokers joke about it. It shouldn’t be an ordeal for repairs to be made or to mop the hall once in a while. It’s also clear that the landlord cares more about money than keeping good tenants. Had the landlord been willing to work with us, we might have stayed but the apartment was not worth it. We will miss the friends we made on this block.
