living here made me want to kill myself
Former Tenant
Pros:
Needed a cheap place to live, thought living with 3 other college kids would be fine.
Cons:
Bedrooms can hardly fit a twin bed. We got bedbugs 3 times. The ceiling under the top floor’s balcony caved in and destroyed all of our furniture, and water flooded the whole building for days. Locked out? the super can’t get yohad to get a therapist to deal with living here, after only 6 months and 8 months I cut my lease short and illegally sublet because I was becoming suicidal from this apartment. 20 minute walk to any train station. Extremely loud traffic. Now it’s full of screaming kids. Landlord was evicting and buying out low income families to renovate and charge thousands for apartments where the washer constantly failed and the kitchen cabinet doors would fall off. The dishwasher didn’t even function and flooded us twice.

BED BUGS
Former Tenant
Pros:
Positives were outweighed by the negatives.
Cons:
There were bed bugs existing in the building that management did not inform us of before moving in. We had to deal with bed bug treatment multiple times during our one year lease, which we are positive did not come from us because they were appearing in random areas of the apartment (bathroom, kitchen, etc.). When our lease was ending, we repeatedly asked building management to pay for a service to confirm there were no bed bugs in the unit so that we could safely move out into a new building and were repeatedly ignored (30+ calls and emails respectively over the course of months). Move in at your own risk.
Advice to owner:
Don’t ignore your tenants.

Good living situation but with problems
Former Tenant
Pros:
Neighbors are great, some have been living there for a long time (some floors are rent stabilized). Great location near prospect park, subways, food. Apartment was renovated so laundry in unit, decent living quarters. There were some major problems but the pros outweighed the cons for me. Super would take care of day to day things like trash and fixing small things, which was nice.
Cons:
The mgmt seemed very keen on making rent stabilized residents leave their apartments: heard stories of them not fixing anything in those apartments to encourage them to leave (leaking walls, ceiling falling down, etc). This building also had bed bugs—had to exterminate. We also had a pipe explode and three floors got water damage at the time. Mgmt not very responsive, and super seemed to change frequently, so had a hard time figuring out updated super contact info.
Advice to owner:
Please be more responsive when there are major issues, for both rent stabilized and renovated apartments!
