New building, did they even try to use noise insulation?
Former Tenant
Pros:
This is a new building, and it has a sleek stylish feel like many newer NYC apartments. There are some amenities like a tiny gym and a tiny common room. A good rooftop space is also available. The size of the apartments is adequate, the appliances are new. You pay for all your own utilities so you can heat and cool the space as you like. There’s laundry in the basement.
Best of all: this is 15-20 mins from Manhattan.
Cons:
Absolute deal breaker for me: the walls are paper thin. I mean, some curtains provide better noise insulation. When I moved in, I didn’t have any neighbors, so I didn’t realize. Now I have neighbors on all sides and I could tell you exactly what they said when they were having a regular conversation with each other, I know if they have a respiratory infection, I can hear even when they turn in the bed at night. I am grateful none of them have little kids, but this is a small gift because the situation is so uncomfortable.
Other cons include:
-you can’t open the window fully. They only open a crack. They probably thought people might jump when they can’t take the noise level anymore. If you cook, the smell will linger for days.
-the price. We are in LIC but not in the glamorous part, but the rent is the same as in the new high-rises.
-The area is kind of unsafe. There are a couple places a block or so away that house addicts and the homeless. It’s great that they can find shelter, but the streets are unsafe even during the day. I’ve been harassed multiple times in broad daylight
-There’s no doorman. There’s a remote security person, but people can still come in when the door is open. I’ve seen people doing laundry in the building who definitely didn’t live here, and packages got stolen a few times.
-the “fun” part of LIC with the nicer restaurants and shops is 10 min walk from this place.
-the gym is too small to use for more than one person
The laundry only has 3 machines, 1 of which is larger and more expensive. And there’s a disgusting pool of water sitting under the washing machine at all times. If you drop something when you take it out of the machine, you’ll have to burn it.
Advice to owner:
I don’t even know. Is there a way to add insulation to the walls after the building is finished?
