Decent place with an awful live in landlord

Pros

Very spacious with pretty big bedrooms, 3rd being either an office or full size bedroom. Balcony access and ample sunlight with a nice living room window.

Cons

Maintenance is nonexistent. When taking the apartment, the landlord will say you are taking it as is and that you can do repairs as needed. However, when you actually go to do the repairs, or even do any general home improvement such as building furniture, the landlord will bang on the ceiling, insist you’re being too noisy, and make outrageous accusations about what you’re doing. In regards to the condition of the apartment, expect awful drafts that have never been fixed. It’s super hot in the summer and freezing winter. And using the heat racks up over $1000 in coned bills. Getting the landlord to fix this turns the burden back on to you. The water pressure in the main bathroom tub is really low and the main bathroom sink has no shutoff valve. Landlord was “surprised”. The balcony is in terrible condition with a dysfunctional awning that is torn apart which again the landlord won’t fix. Taking down their disgusting blinds is also a no no. At no point when living in this home and ESPECIALLY if you have kids, should you bother using the living room as intended as the landlord will find that to noisy, whether that be listening and watching your TV or if your kid decides to run over and hug you. My child is a toddler and we expected to be able to play with her and her toys in the living room normally. This wasn’t possible with the landlord. She made inappropriate comments about our child’s presence in the living room, suggested that we take her out of the apartment daily, and threatened to call CPS on us if we couldn’t get her “under control”. Overall what makes this place terrible is the landlord. They’re very disgruntled and combative about anything that inconveniences them in the slightest. After doing everything to be respectful neighbors and tenants, we were met with controlling and increasingly disrespectful behavior. It created a stressful living environment where we felt like we had to walk on eggshells in our own home. Until they move out be warned that the landlord is a very toxic, abusive, and manipulative person.

Advice to the owners

Just let someone else manage this property. You do it no justice and are letting it rot away with haphazard solutions and unlicensed contractors. That is illegal.
