Former Tenant
Pros:
The price was decent and the location was perfect.
Cons:
The owner is an abusive, lazy and uncaring man. The police were called to the building so regularly we started recognizing the rotating schedules and could predict which officers we would see, there is video evidence of the owner threatening physical harm on the police on one occasion and he was taken into custody in handcuffs. Ilias, the owner, was physically and verbally abusive to many of the tenants (he pushed a 20 something year old woman who lived alone) and is suspected of using a tenant's social security number to check their bank accounts. He refused to fix dangerous issues in the building like light fixtures that threw off sparks due to the water leak through three floors. The rodents and cockroaches had more protection than the tenants. Nothing was maintained or updated, even when it was a health hazard (black mold, rusty nails and broken carpet staples, gaps up to four inches between the wall and the floor) Before the pandemic began there was an issue with a tenant spitting on the front door and smearing snot all over the glass and the door handle, this behavior continued unaddressed THROUGHOUT the pandemic. Ilias put all of the tenants lives in danger by refusing to confront the man who was caught on camera multiple times and by taking down any signs that were put up to warn others of the biohazard. It took multiple reports to the city, multiple police reports, and a letter to Alexandria Ocasio Cortez for him to do anything and his response was to install FAKE cameras...which obviously did nothing. Ilias and the crumbling building aren't the only problems either. Many of the tenants are riddled with their own issues that they take out on everyone else by setting up their living room on the front stoop, playing loud music, pretending to know how to play a FULL DRUM KIT at 9am, drinking and doing ecstasy in their lawn chairs. Or there's Booger Man, the previously mentioned guy who used the shared front door as a tissue for 9 months straight. There is no super any more because Ilias is in court with the previous one.
Advice to owner:
Sell the place. Let someone who gives a damn take over who will provide a safe and comfortable home instead of making tenants fight for basic human decency.
