Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Recent reviews for buildings managed by Shimmie Horn reveal a mixed reputation. Some tenants appreciate the cleanliness, prompt responsiveness, and overall maintenance of their units, citing excellent amenities and supportive management. However, serious concerns emerge from others regarding cleanliness, pest control, and issues of racial profiling that impacted their sense of safety and community. Noise levels and outdated laundry facilities also draw criticism. While many residents recommend these buildings for their spacious apartments and convenient locations, ongoing attention to management practices and building maintenance is essential for enhancing tenant satisfaction and safety.

I Did Not Feel Safe or Welcome Living Here

Pros

The location was convenient, but unfortunately my overall experience living in this building was overshadowed by serious issues that ultimately caused me to leave.

Cons

I was racially profiled while living in this building. On multiple occasions, people approached me and questioned whether I lived in the building, asked to see my ID, asked what floor I lived on, and followed me throughout the building. These were not isolated incidents. It happened enough times that simply coming and going from my own home became uncomfortable and stressful. Eventually, the racial profiling became so overbearing that I decided to leave. There were also serious cleanliness and pest issues. I regularly encountered large roaches throughout the building, including dead roaches casually lying in common areas. The overall condition and cleanliness of the property were extremely disappointing.

Advice to the owners

Management needs to take reports of racial profiling seriously and ensure that every resident can enter, leave, and move throughout their own building without being questioned, followed, or repeatedly asked to prove that they belong there. When I raised these concerns, the owners made excuses rather than taking my claims seriously or meaningfully addressing what was happening. Residents who report experiences like this deserve to be heard and have their concerns taken seriously, not dismissed or explained away. The building also needs significantly better pest control and maintenance of the common areas. Residents should not regularly encounter large roaches, dead or alive, throughout the property.
