Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Tenant reviews for buildings managed by Marion Hoogerwerf consistently describe issues with unresponsiveness and volatile interactions. Residents report poor maintenance, including unresolved leaks, inadequate heating, roach infestations, and electrical problems. Garbage management and cleanliness are often subpar, with rat problems outside due to uncovered trash bins. Tenants feel the landlord hires inexperienced workers and fails to follow through on repairs. Several reviews mention rent-related disputes and a general lack of accountability. Despite desirable locations and decent neighborhoods, the management's neglect and tenant mistreatment detract significantly from the living experience, leading many to discourage renting in these buildings.

Come for the slumlord experience!

Pros

Carroll gardens is a great neighborhood and this is on a beautiful quiet block.

Cons

The landlord is volatile, unresponsive, and is letting the building fall apart. Nothing is fixed right and the condition of the apartments and building are deteriorating rapidly. The landlord handles everything, no super. She hires inexperienced workers, tries to not pay them, and gives them fake names. We had a leak in the ceiling, someone came over to fix it and left a hole in our ceiling for over a week, then they patched it up, but the problem was not fixed so the leak continued and the ceiling started to sag and the next person she sent over just painted it. She didn't turn the heat on well into October and we had to call 311. Building inspectors once showed up and said they needed to get in contact with her and asked if I had her information. We were constantly getting overdue bills addressed to her and utility notices. The outdoor trash bins do not have covers, so there are lots of rats outside. Multiple neighbors complained about her and flagged that the roof of the building has structural problems.

Advice to the owners

Sell the building before its condemned.

Horrible Landlord. Stay Away

Pros

Love this neighborhood and the apartment was nice.

Cons

The landlord is not all there. She is difficult, temperamental, and makes living there a nightmare when you have to deal with her. No one in the building likes her and she is quite dishonest.
