Fine building, rude landlord.
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great location, building has lots of character
Cons:
We had mice and a few roaches here and there. Landlord does not spray and does not provide common area cleaning. Will nickel and dime you on security deposit and Is simply mean.
Advice to owner:
Treat your tenants and neighbors with respect!! It’s simple

Crooked landlord
Former Tenant
Pros:
Beautiful block with trees
Cons:
Jack takes advantage of foreign tenants who don’t know any better. He demanded my foreign roommates pay 6x monthly rent upfront before moving in—they thought this was normal and did as told. He knew better than to make this request of the American tenants and had us sign separate leases with different terms. He tried to screw my roommates and I when it was time for him to return our security deposit by claiming the figure we’d paid up front was lower than what we had actually paid. I produced copies of our original leases as evidence of his “error” and he continued to dig his heals in. Only after enlisting the assistance of a lawyer and threatening to take him to housing court did we receive what we were owed. He is not a kind or honest man. I credit him for not pretending to be anything else. In personal interactions he comes across as auditioning for the role of villain in Disney movie. I’m not an angry or vengeful person and am writing this not to spite Jack but to protect others from dealing with him. Oh yeah, and hope you like mice.

Stay Away from Landlord and Properties
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great location to park slope 5th Ave
Cons:
Beware! This landlord tries to intimidate tenants, only gives out his landline and will not respond to emergencies (when the heat went out, when the shower broke, etc.) He’s known for blaming his wife when a maintenance request is ignored and will enter the apartment without warning. The rent prices are also ridiculous.
Advice to owner:
Stop being a predatory landlord.

Buyer beware
Former Tenant
Pros:
Prime location close to everything
Cons:
The landlord is a villain. He takes advantage of people left, right, and center. Dealing with Jack will make your skin crawl. Plain and simple. He comes into the apartment unannounced and won’t fix anything without you having to pester him 1000 x. If you are a white female you will have a more success than a male. Especially if that male is a POC. Creepy Jack wears a straw hat and his dog looks just as menacing as him. It’s a movie I would watch on HBO but unfortunately one I did not want to live through....
Advice to owner:
Change your dirty shirt you can obviously afford it!

Don’t move here
Former Tenant
Pros:
Nice location and easy commute.
Cons:
I have moved to 8 places in New York and Jack, the landlord is the one who gave me the most valuable lessons. First of all, he is racist and takes advantage of people who are not familiar with the market (foreigners, students..). He likes making communication extremely difficult. You have
to call him because he doesn’t accept email or text (so you don’t get any paper evidence if things go wrong). 30% of the time he will pick up the phone, otherwise you have to leave a voice mail, waiting for days for him to get back to you. This is supper annoying when you are looking for people to fill out your apartment and need his confirmation ASAP or you need him to fix something in the house. I have seen rats, cockroach and ants in the house. He is not the type of person you can trust and he doesn’t even bother pretending to be nice. I wish I never met someone like him in my life but I do learn a lot during my stay. Jack knows law well so you better watch out if you decide to move in
Advice to owner:
Money is not everything.
