Should have listened to my gut feeling

Pros

New build, excellent kitchen and bathroom appliances (the bathroom is what i miss the most!) elevator, pretty clean, W/D in building normally available for use, gym was typically empty, rooftop had nice views,

Cons

From the very start, the rental broker they used was rude and pushy; not friendly whatsoever. For whatever reason, our electricity bill sky rocketed in the summer ($800 for one month at one point) and the property management made it very difficult to set time for con ed to come resolve the problem (they never did.) Property management was incredibly rude most of the time. My therapist suggested that an ESA would be ideal for my mental health illness and management refused an allowance because it’s an allergen free building. No where in our lease does it say the building is allergen free AND it is illegal to deny an ESA to someone. Equipment in the gym stayed broken for months and I am almost positive it was never cleaned throughout the time we lived there, and through the whole pandemic. If a dryer was broken, there was no announcement, email or notice, you would just find out by putting your laundry in there and come back to it being wet and cold. A waste of $2+ Lastly, the owner is a mean spirited person. I met him twice. The second time I met him was when we were moving out. His management team reached out and said we had to do a final walk through of the apt to make sure it was in good shape and to hand over the keys. I told the management that I’d be there at a certain time and they said they let him know. I waited in the lobby and he showed up 15 minutes late but then acted like he wasn’t there for the walk through, or knew who I was. He then proceeds to tell me he already did a walk through but he’ll do another one anyway since I was there. He made a petty comment about covering the holes in the walls from stuff we hung on them (nothing out of the ordinary or over the top: the tv, a few picture frame and a coat rack) THEN he says that I should call the office to go over the billing for the cleaning fee because the apartment was “a mess.” He said that the shower “looked like it hadn’t been cleaned at all” which is an absolute lie. I am a very clean person; what I am not is a professional cleaner with equipment to get hard water stains out of a glass shower wall. We had also swiffered and vacuumed (even the window sills and moldings) the entire place. I could not believe the audacity of this man.

Advice to the owners

Literally just stop being rude and condescending. Be friendly to your tenants. Stop trying to use scare tactics because you think it’ll get your tenants to give you more money.
