Cons

Landlord Tom Nemeth and wife Grace live down the road from property. Both are bilingual: English and Polish. Daughter and family live in ground floor apartment. Landlord threatened to kick us out if we didn’t pay extra cash each month under the table - we did for 6 months until we knew our Tenant Rights. A nice family that lived in building next door, also owned by landlord, was forced to move out when several major appliances broke. Landlord refused to fix/replace them and blamed the family and tried to get them to pay. When we reported minor repairs to landlord, he insinuated we were responsible and behaved unpleasantly, and begrudgingly repaired them. If my husband was not present when the landlord came over, I felt uncomfortable. He spoke to me condescendingly and exhibited chauvinistic behaviors and attitudes. Expect no privacy: whenever we had family or friends visit, the landlord would show up unexpectedly with no apparent reason to knock on the door and ask what we were doing. There are cameras all over the property and it’s possible his daughter reports to him who comes and goes. As 2 people who live in New York City full time to make rent and have little free time, the intrusive and paranoid behavior from the landlord became unbearable. Landlord refused to return deposit. Glad to move out and move on.
