Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Recent tenant reviews of buildings managed by Alexander Gewertz consistently cite poor maintenance and neglect as key issues. Rent-stabilized units offer affordability and decent locations, yet the landlord is often criticized for minimal repairs, slow responsiveness, and lack of concern for tenant safety. Common problems include outdated and dirty conditions, pest infestations, unreliable heating, and water problems, with many tenants reporting ineffective garbage management and absence of proper supervision. Legal threats to tenants asserting their rights and refusal to cover repair costs add to dissatisfaction. Overall, renters advise substantial building renovations and improved management attentiveness to enhance living conditions.

Rent-stabilized shit hole

Pros

Rent-stabilized and great location

Cons

Owner does only emergency repairs and does them cheaply - long, difficult, and tiring process trying to get anything fixed, even issues as urgent as collapsed ceiling. No concern for safety of tenants. Doesn't spend the money on a super, as required by law. Dangerous building to live in..

Advice to the owners

Care about your tenants as something more than cash. This is their home. You get a tax break for rent-stabilization so excuses for not having the money to make repairs are a joke.

No Frills Studio

Pros

Good starter apartment before the problems started

Cons

Couldn't rely on super or landlord to provide services and upkeep the building. My oven never worked. Mini, college sized fridge. Old, outdated studio and building. The boiler broke causing a gas leak which could've been disasterous if not for concerned citizen on the sidewalk that called 911 due to the gas smell. Super wasn't around to let firefighers into the boiler room. There was no hot water for 2 weeks. Then no gas for 8 months.

Advice to the owners

Be more attentative to your tenants safety and building.
