Illegal entry, busted ceilings, electrical issues, & a partridge in a pear tree

Pros

Utilities are included

Cons

The landlords do not repair issues. I had water damage in my ceiling due to needed roof repair. They stated they were aware they needed a new roof but didn't care to fix it properly bc it was too expensive. When I explained I had electrical issues due to water in ceiling, I was asked why I needed 2 lightbulbs. The repair remained ignored and unresolved for 3 years (still unresolved when I left). I was told I can't open my windows in the winter. This apparently is breaking the law, even though i closed my radiator and don't use their heat nor have a thermostat in my apartment to effect their heat. When I refused rent increase in 2022 after 3 years of 2% increases and no resolutions to problems (it is illegally renovated apartment-- increases are not legally asked for) they screamed at me and fought with me that I was breaking the law. I also provided them TWO rent increases during the Covid pandemic to compensate for me working from home and using more electricity. Working from home? oh you guessed it... also apparently illegal to them. I informed the landlords I intended to relocate and that would provide a 30 day notice once I secured a place. 5 months later when I gave my 30 day notice that I was moving out and used my "last months security" they told me I was breaking the law. They then proceeded to enter my apartment on multiple occasions without providing notice to tenant (ie I wouldn't know not to be in a shower or undressed for their entry). When it was explained that this is illegal and advanced notice must be provided to tenants prior entry (outside of emergency flood or fire) according to NYS tenant laws, they threatened to call police on ME. Unless you enjoy an indoor water park, electric disco party from flickering lights (or no lights at all), fire hazards, unexpected guests, or maybe are Law student and want constant debates to help you with your degree, this apartment probably isn't for you.

Advice to the owners

Learn about your city tenant laws and actually repair damages needed instead of being a slumlord
