Uncooperative Landlord - be careful moving out

Our unit was a good first apartment
Cons
There was always garbage in the hallways and the building would smell of it. Landlord was deceitful and uncommunicative at the time of moving out. Did not have the best interests of his tenants and tried to pocket as much money as possible. Having to now open a small claims court filing to get our security deposit back despite leaving the apartment in prime condition.
Advice to the owners
Put your tenants first and be more responsive.
Great first apartment
Pros
The building owner and super have been so accommodating throughout Covid and after. They did not increase our rent by a lot and are very responsive to any issues.
Cons
The building doesn’t have a great trash management system. We end up putting trash on the curb a lot, but they’re trying to resolve it.
Advice to the owners
Handling the garbage issue would be a huge plus
