Could be so great
Pros
Pre-war walkup with super-high ceilings, tall windows, hardwood floors, and great built-in storage. Decent-sized kitchen (for a studio) Good transport links on a quiet block
Cons
The landlord does not seem to care about maintaining what could be a gorgeous gem of a building. The front doors are falling apart, the communal laundry machines break constantly. The the communal “roof deck” is super tiny (the majority of the roof is considered a private roof deck for the penthouse) and the furniture has been broken since the day I moved in. Management does not clean communal areas and it is a battle to get any maintenance requests completed. Cockroaches are a problem in the summer. Any sound from the stairwell echos into the units so while you don’t hear much noise at all between units/floors, it’s incredibly loud if anything happens in the hallway (typically a problem when rowdy guests yell going up and down the stairs as most of the tenants are in their 20s); “renovations” are clearly done as cheaply as possible (the tiles in my shower are the same as the ones in the lobby and were not installed with waterproof materials so the porous grout falls out in chunks); they raise rents as high as the market allows and don’t seem to care about constant tenant turnover
Advice to the owners
Take care of your building and stop price-gouging tenants
Well-maintained, claustrophobic apartments
Pros
- Very quiet, respectful neighbors - Serene courtyard, rare in this city - Great location to trains - Generally responsive management
Cons
- Apartments are tiny - Dated fixtures - Few laundry machines, and often at least 1/4 washers and 1/4 dryers is broken at a time - Laundry room is in basement with courtyard entry with no door, cold to use in winter - Package area is messy, packages have gone missing or stolen - Very expensive for what you're getting - Management can sometimes be incompetent and sneaky with trying to make you pay illegal fees, helps to be well-informed of your rights
