Review Summary for Gideon Platt
Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Recent tenant reviews of buildings managed by Gideon Platt reveal a mixed but often challenging management experience. While some appreciate the responsive on-site superintendents and convenient locations near Central Park, many highlight persistent issues such as unreliable elevators, poor garbage management, inadequate heating, low water pressure, and pest problems. Several renters describe the owner and management as unresponsive or difficult to deal with, citing an unpleasant attitude and lack of transparency. Noise and construction disturbances also affect comfort. Although some tenants enjoy friendly neighbors and pet-friendly policies, overall, management improvements in maintenance, building infrastructure, and communication are strongly advised.

Constant problems in the building like elevator door fails to open etc
Former Tenant
Pros:
Rooms are large
Cons:
The owner Gideon Platt and Brandon Valentin. They're dishonest, rude, condescending and unpleasant people to be around.
Advice to owner:
Lose the arrogance and treat people with respect.

Dilapidated old bldg with possible lead pipes
Former Tenant
Pros:
Proximity to Central Park
Cons:
The owner, mgmt style, bldg elevators get stuck, rodents in basement, pricing way too high for all that plus low water pressure and heat and hot water weren't good. Luckily gone now and in a much nicer place with better landlord/manager who isn't so difficult to deal with.
Advice to owner:
Sell the bldg to a better person who cares about people and knows how to manage a building.

Old building with a ton of demands placed on it.
Former Tenant
Pros:
generally clean, elevators are reliable until they aren't (never get on the elevator without your cell phone, even to do the laundry in the basement because if the elevator gets stuck you could be totally screwed). the lobby is kept clean, packages are often delivered to your door and everyone who works here is agreeable to a degree. the landlord has been overheard saying he longs for the day the rent stabilized apartment dwellers have died. so that's fun.
Cons:
super stingy with the heat and can't seem to get the water situation in hand. there is no month where there isn't a day without water at random times of day. the laundry room floor is often flooded which is super considering the machines are running and it's a setting for an electrocution some day. There has been non stop construction while the new owner rearranges various apartments. these aren't small jobs or simple updates. He's actually adding bathrooms which is next level updating and hard on the ears.
Advice to owner:
sell

Easy living and super convenient
Former Tenant

Responsive management, good elevators, clean lobby, nice neighbors, pet friendly
Cons:
Pipes get hot in winter and can flake off

So far so good
Former Tenant
Pros:
No major issues in the time I’ve been here. All facilities work properly, never had pests, never had package/delivery issues, and the super is responsive and helpful.
Cons:
The heating is controlled by the building, so it’s not always your ideal temperature in colder months. Heating tended to be a bit too hot for me in winter months, so I usually kept a window open and it was fine.

Great location
Former Tenant
Pros:
I moved here for a year during the pandemic because I got a great Covid deal. The only reason I'm leaving is because the deal ended and I can't afford the new rent.

My apartment has a renovated kitchen with a dishwasher and there is plenty of closet space. Also it is pet friendly and about a 5-6 minute walk to Central Park.

The neighbors are so friendly and kind. A lot of people have lived here since the 90s and are very welcoming.
Cons:
Small living space and most units are not rent stabilized.
