Basement apartment

Pros

Located in a decent area in the Bronx.

Cons

Landlord is a slumlord. He is a massive master manipulator. I moved into this apartment not knowing it was illegal. It was approved by HRA. When recently filing a complaint to HPD about his absence in repairs and sewage constantly backing up; and him requesting more rent back in April 2020, they reported the apartment was illegal. He told the court he would find a way to make it legal. Which he has yet to do. In the meantime I am looking for another apartment to reside.

Advice to the owners

Treat your tenants like they’re humans. I hope no one ever has to experience what I experienced in your home.
