Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
129 East 4 Street in Manhattan offers a clean, well-maintained living environment with quiet, respectful neighbors and solid building conditions. Residents appreciate the responsive landlord and regularly maintained trash and hallways. The location benefits from being central yet peaceful, with some units notably quiet and newer-feeling despite the building's age. However, the switch to an automated heating system has caused inconsistent warmth in winter, occasionally leaving apartments cold overnight. Some units face reduced sunlight due to nearby construction and scaffolding. Additionally, being a walk-up building with no elevator may be a consideration. Overall, it remains a recommended and comfortable option in the East Village.

Clean, well maintained building but cold in winter
Former Tenant
Pros:
The super is great - on site every day Trash room is emptied daily Hallways always clean Neighbors are mostly quiet, respectful Landlord is very responsive
Cons:
They switched to an automated heating system and now it is really cold in the winter, for long stretches. The heat cuts off in the middle of the night (when we really need it) and on in the daytime (when we really don't).
Occasional pests, mice, but we live near the trash room so perhaps to be expected.

Clean, well-maintained building
Former Tenant
Pros:
If you get a nice unit, the building is solid. Good condition for an older building. The apartments facing the back are very quiet for how central the location is.
Cons:
My ground floor unit did not get much sunlight to begin win, but the building put up scaffolding over my window a few months after I moved in due to construction on another building bordering the back.
