Avoid at all costs
Pros
I enjoyed the neighborhood and the other tenants. There was a lot to do in Crown Heights, and it is close to the park. It felt very neighborly, and it sucks that the building was so awful because I think I would've enjoyed the area more if the building/ landlord wasn't so awful.
Cons
A massive roach problem that persisted for months, with no proper responsiveness from the landlord. Water damage affected the two back bedrooms and the ceiling of the top floor. Landlord told us that we should not flush toilet paper down the toilet, as if we were stupid for doing so. The front door was always sketchy, but eventually it broke and was never fixed, and therefore does not lock; anybody can easily push it open and break in. HUGE SAFETY HAZARD! We complied with the landlord's request in order to obtain the security deposit, but he withheld a large amount of money regardless, and did not pay us within the 14-day period.
Advice to the owners
Don't be a landlord anymore.
Nice area- poorly maintained
Pros
Great area, nice layout, right across from laundry. I truly would’ve stayed there a long time if the building was maintained sufficiently. Lovely neighbors- it’s clear that this landlord only selects very young (early 20s) easygoing people (usually with guarantors); take that as you will.
Cons
No pest management despite frequent requests, denies nearly every tenant their security deposit without fail, inadequate cleaning, refused to maintain the building (fixing leaks, replacing rotten wood) when asked, accused us of the changing locks to spite him (he just couldn’t figure out how to use the key). I would not recommend. Every single occupant in the building moved out at the same time because we couldn’t put up with how poor the management was.
Advice to the owners
Please bring in a professional roofer to fix leaks, a professional exterminator for future tenants, and please stop putting all maintenance costs on your tenants’ deposits.
