A bad time in Gowanus
Pros
The apartment was really big, and I got it at a decent rate. It was relatively quiet, especially at night.
Cons
This place has big problems right away. The broker promised so much, that never came to be. Wouldn’t work with Gail again. There were no smoke or CO detectors installed when I moved in despite it being in the lease, and being highly illegal to not include them. My landlord made it sound like he was doing me a favor by not charging me for them when he installed them 2 weeks later. The biggest problems were with heat/hot water and the intercom. First, there was no hot water, which took about 10 days to fix. Then, there was no heat, which is tied to the hot water heater, and they did a bandaid fix, so then the heat was always on, and you had no control over it. Maintenance requests were made and ignored. Luckily I moved out before summer came back. There is no functional intercom in this apartment. They tried to fix it and gave up. You can’t receive any packages, or let in anyone for maintenance. National Grid estimated my bill for 6 months because they couldn’t get access and the landlord wouldn’t give them access. The buzzer only works on the 2nd door and the 1st door is always locked, so even if they fixed it it was broken. The intercom was past the 1st door. The apartment was filthy and had trash on the floor when I moved in. Construction is constant. They destroyed the building next door starting at 7AM every morning, and construction will start soon. Downstairs is a business space, so consider there might be a loud doggy daycare if you’re considering this space as a home office.
