Great units, ruined by greedy scamming, manipulative ownership/management
Pros
Late 20s/early 30s couple. We enjoyed living here. Street is relatively quiet save for occasional honking by through drivers and typical partying and fireworks on holidays. Lots of good cafes and restaurants to work nearby. Units are a nice layout, great natural light on the street side. thick walls, elevator slow but reliable, steam heating works great. Boiler broke only once or twice last winter and was fixed promptly. Super is hard working and mostly responsive but also overworked and probably underpaid. Gym is basic but functional and rarely occupied, just rather musty. Prior management replaced broken appliances. Can’t speak for new management.
Cons
Property is no longer worth what they are charging. The new owners (anonymous to us) and management, Charney companies, offered an illegal $5500 renewal after we moved in under prior ownership in 2025 for $4650, claiming the building is no longer covered by the good cause eviction law for bogus, unverifiable reasons. We decided to move out rather than continue negotiations and give more money to these people. Building has some cockroach issues and frequent package theft.
Advice to the owners
add some actual value to the property before ripping off your tenants
