Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Recent tenant feedback on GOLDEN REALTY CO buildings points to poor cleanliness and pest issues, particularly with mice and cockroaches, alongside outdated and unkempt common areas. Many tenants highlight unresponsiveor difficult management, with some noting unprofessional conduct and threats over lease disagreements. Garbage management varies but often needs improvement. Heating and water pressure are generally adequate, but noise levels can be high due to thin walls and lively neighbors. While convenient locations near transit and amenities are praised, multiple renters advise urgent building renovations and better tenant relations to create a safer and more comfortable living environment.

Don’t live here
Former Tenant
Pros:
Good location for the price
Cons:
Landlord is unresponsive and apartments are generally small and grimy. The entry way is also fairly dirty. Ours also had an awful layout and extremely small bedrooms. They didn’t clean the unit at all before we moved in and the floors looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in years. We found a couple dead cockroaches too, though while we lived in the unit only found 1 living roach. In the winter the rooms over heated. Packages were stolen semi frequently. They also tried to not give our security deposit back and we had to email multiple times to receive it.

An absolute nightmare
Former Tenant
Pros:
Location, it’s close to EV hotspots and subways
Cons:
Everything else. It’s right next to a firehouse and it’s on 14th, so it’s very loud. The walls are thin. Packages were stolen all the time. The owners were absolutely absurd and refused to help us deal with a mice AND cockroach problem. We bought traps and supplies of our own accord and then they threw them out when they were showing the apartment. They also charged us for simply having an AC unit - not to install or provide one, just to have one in the apartment that we purchased. We stated we were moving out due to the pest problem and he threatened my roommate on the phone which was really scary.

Great location if you don't mind sacrificing for it.
Former Tenant
Pros:
Incredible location, Deo is an amazing super. He takes care of everything and is very quick to respond, he's is very nice an accommodating. The landlord gave out decent temporary discounts for COVID lockdown. The unit was in great condition aside from thin walls. I had no issues or repairs needed.
Cons:
Small units with awkward floor plans, cheaply re-modeled with EXTREMELY thin un-insolated walls. You can hear everything from your neighbors EVERYTHING. Landlord is strict and difficult, will try to keep your deposit if there is any excuse they can use. The Landlord is a property management company who doesn't seem to be interested in accommodating/keeping good tenants so this building has a high turnaround.
Advice to owner:
Work more with tenants to keep the ones who make an effort to be model tenants. If you must raise rent at least try to offer some sort of incentive for tenants to stay, longer leases, updated the common areas and amenities, something besides raising rent the maximum legal amount with no negotiation. I would have loved to have stayed but for the price and the quality of the apartment it was not worth it, even considering the phenomenal location.

You’re there for the location.
Former Tenant
Pros:
-It’s central to everything.
Cons:
-Young college crowd has moved in so there’s lots of noise late at night in the hallway, barking dogs, trash that piles in the hall. -The landlord is completely noninvolved and seems to only view his tenants in terms of how much money he can get from them (no empathy around the pandemic, threatens to hike rent, only accepts rent via mailed check and charges $1000 for late rent). When it was time to renew the lease he asked for $1000 more a month. -The condition of the buildings and apartments need updating- paint was peeling, tiles were out of place, cabinet doors were crooked.
Advice to owner:
-Allow tenants to pay rent via direct deposit. -Renovations are sorely needed.

These people do not care about the quality of living for tenants
Former Tenant
Pros:
There's not much going for this building. Nothing comes to mind.
Cons:
-Mice INFESTATION! You will have daily visits from my mice, they come in despite all caulking and other preventative measures.
-the super is a lazy piece of work, does not actually live in the building and does not care about the tenants. Poignant anecdote: an elderly woman, a tenant of 30-40+ years, whose brother pays their rent, was clearly not well, not keeping up with cleaning, grocery shopping, etc. Another tenant reached out to Adult Protective Services on the woman's behalf, the landlord and super made no efforts to followup on cleanliness or assistance for the tenant. The tenant was discovered dead in the apartment just yesterday and the tremendous stench emanating from her corpse now fills the entire apartment building including every apartment in the building.
-the super and landlord will gaslight you! They will actively lie to you, will only communicate over phone or in person i.e. only ways that leave no physical trace or evidence. They know how bad they are doing and they've resorted to performing a cover-up at this point.
-I overhead the Super yelling at a tenant who was seeking pest removal services. He stood outside their door with the exterminator, who confirmed the presence of mice throughout the entire building, yelling "liar" over and over again. Odd thing for a non-live-in super to do.
Advice to owner:
None.

On living here...
Former Tenant
Pros:
Great location, very responsive super
Cons:
Building can look very unkempt in hallways, lots of elderly who still live in rent-controlled housing that don’t maintain their apt and attract pests like mice, owner can be very bizarre and takes it personally when you negotiate with him- he will unreasonably try to hike the rent up after your first year living there
Advice to owner:
Fair rent pricing, maintain building better, fix up the units more
