Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Tenants renting from KIM TSOI at 55 Hester Street appreciate the building’s cleanliness, community vibe, and convenient location near dining and transit. Management and landlords are generally responsive and kind, with well-managed garbage and effective pest control. However, multiple reviews note issues with high electric heating costs due to inefficient insulation and electric heat, resulting in steep utility bills. Maintenance challenges include prolonged roof construction, limited laundry facilities, occasional flooding, and a persistent bathroom odor problem. While rent increases have been significant, the building’s amenities and neighborhood appeal keep many recommending it, though some advise management to improve infrastructure and communication.

Great apartment, kind landlords

Pros

Liked the landlords and the apartment was nice and building was clean and had a community feel to it

Cons

They raised rents a lot (however we were there during covid and had a great deal + the neighborhood was rapidly gentrifying) And the bathroom had a weird odor coming from the vents that they never got rid of

Advice to the owners

Fix the bathroom smell

place is good if u can get past electric bill

Pros

bedrooms are good size for nyc standards

Cons

heat is electric so electric bill is crazy high and insulation is also abysmal, only 1 washer/dryer, exhaust fans in shower and kitchen are terrible
