Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Tenants renting from JOHN MCCARTHY generally find the buildings well-located with convenient access to multiple transit options and nearby amenities like grocery stores. Common praises include well-maintained shared facilities such as gyms and rooftop decks, plus a friendly and helpful building staff. However, renters frequently mention issues with small apartment sizes, limited storage, and noise disturbances, sometimes due to neighboring tenants or rooftop gatherings. Garbage management and pest control receive mixed feedback, with some residents highlighting rodent problems linked to nearby restaurants. Rent increases and occasional package thefts are also concerns. Overall, management is seen as reasonably responsive, though there is room for better communication and noise control.

Decent Space Overall

Pros

Gym, Laundry in building, in unit speaker, city skyline views on upper apartments, Quick access to everything you need down the street on 125th.

Cons

Very small rooms, weird shaped, very thin walls, given the location, can be unpredictable in terms of comfort/safety, Large rats at night outside due to restaurants lack of new garbage cans

Avoid this place

Pros

Convenient location: Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Starbucks are all within a five-minute walk. The custodial staff are consistently nice and friendly.

Cons

Frequent package thefts – During my two years here, I lost items worth at least $800 due to stolen deliveries. Noise disturbance – A neighbor on the 15th floor (not sure if he still resides there) regularly played extremely loud music. Even from the farthest apartment on the floor, the entire hallway was affected. Excessive lockout fees – Getting locked out on weekends costs over $200 to hire Mr. Smith, whereas in other luxury apartments I’ve lived, this service is typically provided free of charge. Rising rent – The rent increases steeply: $3,500 the first year (reasonable), then $4,000, and later $4,250. Poor amenities – Very limited storage space and low-quality interior finishes.
