Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on openigloo.
Tenant reviews for 420 West 42 Street reveal a mix of strengths and challenges. Positive aspects include well-maintained, spacious apartments with great city views, friendly and helpful doormen, and a convenient Midtown location close to public transit. The building generally scores high on cleanliness, pest control, and water pressure. However, tenants report ongoing elevator malfunctions, dated interiors, noise from nearby traffic and Port Authority, and issues with management responsiveness. Pest infestations, especially cockroaches, have been a serious concern for some residents despite pest control efforts. The gym facilities and building amenities also receive calls for improvement. Overall, it's a good option for renters valuing location and staff but with some maintenance and management drawbacks.

Good enough for a first place
Former Tenant
Pros:
- Doorman, concierge are all very friendly - Never had an issue with packages - Laundry in building is a big pro. Never too busy - Super is accessible - Great views and lighting from the 20th floor, facing the south and west.
Cons:
- Gym is missing some basic stuff. Dumbbells don't go above 60 lbs, and no squat rack. - We had to put up a divider for our flex 2-bed apt, and were only allowed to get it done from one company. Terrible service, that company even closed down. - Biggest con is proximity to Port Authority's sketchiness
