Review summary

Summarized from anonymous rental reviews on Openigloo.

Recent tenant experiences with buildings managed by John Young reveal a generally responsive and attentive management team, praised for cleanliness, pest control, and maintenance responsiveness. Tenants appreciate safe, quiet buildings with good neighbors and convenient amenities like laundry and roof decks. However, some properties face challenges including occasional heating issues, noise especially on street-facing units, package theft, and delays in certain repairs. A few reviews highlight concerns about inconsistent management practices and unresolved pest problems in specific buildings. Overall, John Young's management is seen as proactive, but improvements in communication, pest control, and consistent maintenance would enhance tenant satisfaction.

Cons

Horrible management by Jennifer Suarez. Extremely unprofessional and potentially unlawful conduct. Management refused to provide a copy of the lease, effectively depriving us of basic tenant protections and documentation required to assert our rights. Rent was then increased repeatedly and arbitrarily, without transparency or written justification. Payment practices were improper. Rent was consistently demanded in cash, and obtaining a receipt required multiple in-person visits, creating unnecessary barriers to maintaining proof of payment. Despite being notified several days in advance that rent would be only a few hours late — and that full payment would be made the same day — Ms. Suarez appeared early in the morning, repeatedly knocking and engaging in conduct that constitutes harassment. As new tenants unfamiliar with local tenant protections, we were subjected to an unlawful self-help eviction, forced to vacate the apartment within hours and left without housing. The apartment was returned in excellent condition. No alterations were made — not even a picture was hung — yet the security deposit was wrongfully withheld under the pretext of painting and renovations. This pattern of behavior reflects disregard for tenant rights, improper rent practices, and coercive tactics that raise serious concerns regarding compliance with housing regulations. Prospective tenants should proceed with caution.

Advice to the owners
